I am trying to set up Novell eDirectory 8.8 SP5 to simulate a client network. I used Netware in the 1990s, but not as an administrator. I have some experience with openLDAP and MS AD, but I am having a lot of trouble with installing and using eDirectory and iManager.

I normally use a simple java ldap tool called LDAP Browser/Editor for testing connectivity and getting information on filters, searches, etc. I cannot determine the correct base dn to connect.

I also use a tool called JXplorer that I normally use to debug kerberos connectivity. This tool is able to connect to and query the eDirectory server that I set up (running on Windows 2003), but it must determine the base dn itself.

I need to get some information to programmatically connect in Java to eDirectory, and the base dn is the first data point I need.

When I use DHost/iConsole, it tells me this info:
Partition name:   .DSTEST.
Server read:       TESTENVIRONMENT-NDS.Novell
(same data for Master replica)

In the eDirectory Browser, I see this info in the tree view:
Directory Tree
(Virtual Root)
T=Test1
Attributes
O=Novell
O=DS
CN=Security

I couldn't find a quick start guide for eDirectory 8.8 in google. I found some guides for older versions, but I am not familiar enough with Novell to know if they are applicable or not.

Thanks,

Hello.

We did some converting of User accounts to GroupWise External Entities. We noticed that several account did not work properly. After the conversion the user appeared correctly in GW but in eDir the account was renamed something like 23_1 and the user account still existed. I don't know why this happened.

I was able to correct some of these by deleting the user object and renaming the 23_1 to the correct name. However, some have multiple 23_1 type names and have no eDir account to be deleted. How can I remove the multiple External Entities without deleting the GroupWise account?

This is very wierd. We recently upgrade to 8.8 SP2 from a nice a stable 8.7.3.4. We also recently upgrade GroupWise from 7.0.3 to 8 SP1.
Has anyone experienced this?

Hi,

I'm in the process of upgrading IDM RBPM 3.61 to 3.7 on Windows and one of the steps is running the NrfCaseUpdate process.

One of the steps this utility does is to call the schema utility:
For Unix/Linux typically /opt/novell/eDirectory/bin/ndssch
For Windows C:\Novell\NDS\schemaStart.bat:

This sort of goes well, it reports it is successful but then eDirctory doesn't start properly.
When I look in task manager dHost has started with my account instead of "System" as it should.

I think the startup must be done in the right way for this utility to work because it doesn't matter if I shut down eDir and start it as normal, the schema update doesn't work.

The schema update is supposed to change two attributes from Case Exact to Case Ignore.

How do I get around this problem ?

I have a customer who has two directories:

Directory A: eDirectory
Directory B: eDirectory

Question 1:
When users are created in directory B, I would like it to check if there is a matching username in directory A, making it impossible to have duplicate username in both directories - is this possible in eDirectory?

Directory A will soom be migrated to Active Directory, so the situation will become like this, in the future:

Directory A: Active Directory
Directory B: eDirectory

Question 2 (presumes answer to question 1 is yes):
Will it be possible to check (like in the first situation) to check wether a username exists in directory A, to prevent duplicates?

Hi,

I'm in the process of upgrading IDM RBPM from 3.61 to 3.7 and one of the stages is to extend the schema, no surprise.
In doing so first the User Application driver has to be exported and then imported again.
This does not work well for me so I started to investigate if I could manually export it with ice (both .exe and iManager).
By the way, I run eDir, IDM and iManager on Windows 2003.

What i find is that an ldif export of any object/container with children is successful if it is not under the container cn=IDV-DriverSet,ou=res,o=corp.
At first I thought it coult be the fact it was a separate partition so I merged it but without any change of success.

The user has supervisor rights to all objects/attributes.

the error I get is this:

Hi,

I have a microsoft.net C# web application that accesses edirectory LDAP via the .NET Framework System.DirectoryServices objects. After a while, usually 24 hours or so, I will start getting an error message that says "The Directory Service is unavailable." everytime I try to access edirectory in my code, and the only way I can fix this is to reset IIS. It seems like some resources aren't being freed up, eventhough as best as I can tell I'm closing all my connections.

Are there any known issues with accessing eDirectory with the microsoft directory services objects? I have posted this question on Microsoft forums but have gotten nowhere so I figured I'd try this route.

Thanks,

Some background: I am a teacher at a school with Novell Open Enterprise Server, NetWare 6.5 Server Version 5.70.07, eDirectory edirectory 8.7.3.9, client 4.91. I joined a month ago. The two people who "managed" the server are no longer with the school and not helpful even if contacted. I have once, many years ago run a NT4 file server that ran a login script. I have run Linux server at home for a few years so am not scared of console. I know what a policy is and can change it locally on a client machine. I am the only one in the school with any IT experience at all and the admin password has been handed over. I have hacked about and worked out how to get on to NetWare Administrator (v5.1.9f), Remote Manager and the server console. And that's all she wrote.

HELP!

As far as I can tell when the network was "managed" before there was a group policy set up but it is inadequate (allows too much and the kids have been taking advantage - playing networked games etc.). I need some pointers to a walk through on setting up global group policies for the students. I would google but the terminology I need for that is not yet at my fingertips.

I also want to work out how to set up directory shares and control the login scripts - at the moment a clever student can hit a hidden nework share and open up NetWare Administrator - I have seen it. They type "My Computer" in to interenet explorer and away they go. I need a policy to stop that for sure!

Any help, links, cups of strong coffee, sympathy all greatfull accepted.

I am pretty self sufficient but this is like learning Russian - I have not the foggiest where to start.
