I've just discovered that the netpbm package in SLED 11 is lacking the ppmtompeg executable which was included in the SLED 10 package. There's a comment in the spec file that says "removed ppmtompeg sources [#261140] "

I'm assuming that number refers to a bug report. If I try and view https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=261140 I get 'not authorized'.

Anyone else willing to try viewing it if they can view it and it is related to netpbm and ppmtompeg share what it says?

I am aware I can download netpbm and build it from source but I'm curious as to why ppmtompeg has been omitted from the SLED 11 package.

I did try using gconf-editor to set apps/metacity/general focus_mode click and have looked in the Tools->Windows to try and set this but there really isn't anything there that is helpful.

Hi

I'm using an updated version of SLED 11 and I'm experiencing a strange problem with phonon on KDE, with different behaviours that I'll try to describe here.

Everytime I start my machine and log into KDE I get an error from phonon saying something like "The audio device <souncard model name> with <chip reference> is not working" and I get no sound from it. However if I open a terminal and run alsamixer, I verify that the "Master Palyback Switch" is off (muted) and that my "Master Playback Volume" is set at the maximum value in both channels. I then adjust the settings by unmutting the "Master Playback Switch" and turning the volume down a bit, and then without restarting X, just by opening an audio file, the soundcard plays it. Sometimes I have to do rcalsasound restart before running alsamixer, to get the sound.

I thought that the problem was with my saved card profile, so I did alsactl store, after adjusting the settings, I checked my /etc/asound.state and the settings saved were correct, namely I had the following lines:
control.1
...
name Master Playback Switch
...
value true
...
control.2
...
name Master Playback Volume
...
value.0 48
value.1 48
...

I then rebooted my machine and immediately after the reboot I looked into /etc/asound.state and the values were again Master Playback Switch muted and Master Playback Volume set at maximum value or more precisely:
control.1
...
name Master Playback Switch
...
value false
...
control.2
...
name Master Playback Volume
...
value.0 63
value.1 63
...

Then I logged again into KDE and got the same error message from phonon and no sound again.
At this point I thought that something was setting the volume up just before the alsasound service got halted, so I edited /etc/init.d/alsasound and commented the line
$alsactl -f $asoundcfg store, inside the stop) case, followed by a manual readjust of the sound settings and saved the configuration. The machine was rebooted again.

After the reboot the sound settings were ok and logged into KDE. At this point the phonon error message was displayed and no sound again. I checked the mixer settings and the problem was there again. However in subsequent reboots I get the phonon error message displayed but the correct sound settings prevailed, so I can listen to multimedia content.

This problem is present from the moment I installed SLED 11. While the problem itself is not complicated, it can be annoying because some updates may reset the /etc/init.d/alsasound service script, and otherwise I would like to have my audio settings preserved automatically accross reboots. Could a patch be made available to fix this?

Can someone using SLED 11 with all latest update installed try running this:

Can someone using SLED 11 with all latest update installed try running this:

and say if it works? Doesn't work for me. I suspect that it's borked because of an issue with xul-runner since Firefox was updated to 3.5 and that is in turn breaking thumbnail generation in Nautilus if it encounters an HTML file.
(Nautilus uses gnome-web-photo to generate thumbnails for HTML files.) If I disable thumbnailing for HTML files and kill/restart nautilus thumbnail generate works again.

I observed in another thread that a build of Firefox 3.5 from openSUSE build service broke Epiphany and gnome-web-photo. I'm wondering if when putting Firefox 3.5 build in to SLED 11 Novell have paid attention to the Epiphany issue and fixed it but neglected gnome-web-photo.

I just installed SLED 11 and I am wondering where I might find many development tools (eclipse, glade, quanta, javac JDK (or IcedTea), etc..), are these not included as RPM's for SLED 11?

Am I missing a repo maybe (I've already had to add an openSuSe repo to get thunderbird which I really didn't want to do but the thunderbird tar.gz requires libstdc++.so.5 which I also can't seem to find)?

Have I made poor choice for a developers desktop, seems there are many things that I am missing that I've gotten used to getting with my other linux distros (even Red Hat has most of these things packaged)? I'm really only going to SLED because it's the only distro that is supported for running Unigraphics NX 5.

I've certainly had to do my share of manually installing apps from .tar.gz but it seems some of these things like eclipse and glade (or glade-2) are pretty standard?

Have I missed something. Thanks,

The machine is set to LDAP authentication (When I install with eDir Auth, it fails). At the end of the installation and first boot, GDM accepts LDAP credentials. When the desktop is loaded, ncl_tray autostarts.
