Hello,

I've seen following problem twice.
NOWS SBE 2.5 with samba running on vmware workstation (eval version, not patched)
Vista client with novell client from SBE installed.

New user with same name and pw as defined at sbs administrator.
Samba share of one directory (via iManager) - no access problem.
Adding a second share (via iManager) - no problem.

When mapping a network drive letter in vista (or xp) explorer to the share
\\servername-W\sharename
(share name is LINUX_DATA_LUKASYS)
I see something like connection will be checked and workstation shows
"blue screen".

Windows network drive letter was free - no used before.

Hi!

I'm using almost one year the NOWS SBE 2 with paid maintenance (technical support) and the SBE 2.5 appears on my products downloads.

I tried to download and get the “Activation codes” from my Customer Center > Products > Download.
The “activation code” which was send by email is for 60 days.
Questions:
1.If I paid for maintenance why the activation code is only for 60 days?
2.Shall I use the old (SBE 2) activation codes for the new SBE 2.5 server?

TIA

For all NOWS SBE 2.0 - 2.3 users, please verify whether you are using the 32 or 64 bit versions prior to downloading SP2 patches and updating to SBE 2.5.

The NOWS SBE 64 bit 2.5 version is still NOT available at this writing. The NOWS SBE available online currently is for the 32 bit (i386) version. Novell is working on the 64 bit update to 2.5, along with other improvements over the 64 bit 2.0 - 2.3 packages.

For those of us that have already installed 64 bit, I would also encourage all to file continual service requests should you make the mistake of using the automatic package update to SP2, if you don't know how to isolate the different packages. If you aren't diligent, you will need to re-install the server completely to fix an SP2 update that does not work for 64 bit.

NOWS SBE 64 bit prior to 2.5 can be broken if you update from SP1 to SP2 before Novell gets the 64bit 2.5 version available.

I did write to the tech group concerning the install program not contacting the kernel correctly, the documentation differences, NDS & Groupwise/Messenger install and operational issues, and over a dozen other technical issues all stemming from the web (java) install program being so functionally isolated from the SLES kernel. For instance, should you install the DHCP and the DNS via SBE, DO NOT install nor manage the SLES/YAST versions, that is NOT in the docs. If either doesn't work, uninstall the SBE version and use the SLES/YAST version until you get either a service request answered or the correct 2.5 update becomes available.

They have responded and advised me to post all the suggestions to the forum along with the NOWS engineering group to advise some workarounds and cautions that we have found during our many NOWS server installs... and subsequent re-installs (very embarassing when on-site!!!)

Anyway, should anyone have any feedback towards improving the SBE install program, and I'm hoping there are a lot of you, please use this forum and continue to send notes to Novell about how NOWS SBE is. Maybe, they will return to the Beta testing phase prior to releasing products and updates, as they used to.

Also, FYI, I am one of the older Netware and Unix techs from the 80's that still uses and supports NSBS and Unix... and yes, the MS stuff, too.

Thanks,

Hi!

I'm using almost one year the NOWS SBE 2 with paid maintenance (technical support) and I have the option to upgrade to SBE 2.5.

The problems I encountered during last year are:

1.Very poor documentation.

2.Not easy and automatic way to configure the Hard disks and volumes (not documented).

3.Changing some of the configuration defaults, like WEB folder place, will disturb the HelpDesk and maybe other applications and tools, and maybe put your server in an “unsupported status” (not documented).

4.It seems that HelpDesk install the MySQL or few MySQL files. What if I want to run a Dynamic WEB Site , using MySQL on other volume or folder (not documented).

5.Since the WEB folder is not on the default place, the paid maintenance (technical support) for HelpDesk is very bad. SR (service request) created on 1 Apr 2009, wasn't solved yet.

6.A Technical Support engineer told me not to install the MailScanner since the GroupWise is not installed on the default folder\place.

7.The DNS\DHCP can't be managed from the GUI interface. I was told by the technical support engineer that, to manage it you need to know some linux commands (not documented).

8.Amanda doesn't backup to other server Netware NCP volume.

9.The Technical Support said that the SBE is not for real production, if you install other applications (phpMyAdmin, eCommerce), you my be in an “unsupported status”.

10. Technical support engineers have very low experience with the SBE version.

11.It is very hard to manage the NOWS SBE 2 without linux knowledge.

Since I'm a Netware “veteran”, I configured the NOWS SBE 2 server (the third server) building few NCP volumes:
1.Raid 1 (mirroring)
2.Partition REISER (TID 7000012 & 3099959)
3.Configure few NCP volumes

My actual LAN is a tree with 3 servers 2 of them NW 6.5 SBS sp1 and a NOWS SBE 2:
1.NW 6.5 sp1 - Border Manager (Firewall)
2.NW 6.5 sp1 - file server, (was used for GW, iPrint, DNS\DHCP, all of them migrated to the third server), not used now.
3.NOWS SBE 2 (starter pack) - GW, iPrint, DNS\DHCP, WEB site with PHP and MySQL.

I am considering to upgrade the second (Netware) server from Netware 6.5 to NOWS SBE 2.5 and the third from SBE 2.0 to SBE 2.5.

Questions about the new SBE 2.5:
1.I understood that the /root can't be on an NSS volume. Am I right?
2.If the /root can't be on an NSS volume, is it worthwhile yet to install and use NSS?
3.To upgrade from 2.0 to 2.5 and configure NSS do I need to reformat the HDs?
4.Since Amanda doesn't backup to NCP volumes what is the free way to backup the NOES SBE servers?
5.From the EULA point of view I understand that I can install same NOWS SBE on more than one server, on same tree. Am I right?

Any comment and answer is welcomed.

TIA

I just did a clean install of NOWS SBE 2.5 on a lab machine. It went much better than I expected and I had very few issues when compared to Version 2.0.

The first thing I noticed is that the default partitioning has changed.

Version 2.0 creates a SWAP, and "/". It required that "/boot" be part of "/".

Version 2.5 creates a "/boot" (ext2), SWAP, and "/" (ext3). "/" uses all remaining space on the disk.

As with Version 2.0, I configured a static IP address. I don't know why a server defaults to using DHCP, especially when changing the IP address after the fact is so difficult.

I entered the product codes and successfully registered with NCC. It showed there were 39 updates to apply but there was no way to find out anything about them so I skipped the updates.

The basic install completed without incident. Next, using the Simba web interface I applied all updates. Again, there were no issues.

I installed the following additional software, one at a time.

Directory Services (eDirectory)

Management Tools (iManager)

Personal File Backup (iFolder)

Windows File and Print Sharing (Samba)

Firewall (IPTables)

VPN Server (OpenVPN)

There were no issues as each one installed. For the most part, I used the default options. The online help is limited and in some places ambiguous - similar to the rest of the documentation.

During the install I noticed that the license agreement still says Version 2.0 and when I logged into the server I see that Yast Online Update is showing updates are waiting even though the Simba GUI tells me there are none. I didn't try to install them.

I had one issue which requires more investigation. I initially tried to configure software RAID 1 as I had done in Version 2.0. The install continued but the system wouldn't boot from the hard drive. I tried to resolve the issue by installing Grub on each hard drive as I had done in Version 2.0 but I still couldn't boot. At that point I decided to take the default partitioning and attempt a RAID 1 install another time.

After finding several security issues with a fully patched Version 2.0, I decided to run Novell Support Advisor against this fully patched new installation. This is part of what it reported:

Detected Firefox 3 Remote code execution vulnerability, update system to apply: MozillaFirefox-3.5.3-1.4.2 (SUSE-SA:2009:048)

Patches Needed: 11 Security, 6 Recommended, 2 Optional

I haven't done any additional configuration or testing. I'll post anything I find that may be of interest to the community.
