Brilliant...

The SA has reinstalled everything from scratch which has resolved the problem and all the updates etc are installed.

I'm now trying to install SRIML prior to moses and am getting a strange error message:

make[2]: *** No rule to make target '/SRILM/RELEASE', needed by 'SRLMversion.h'
...

I understand that although the message implies it is tying to "make" it, the header file is actually missing.
I've discovered that three files in the build (/Makefile, /misc/src/Makefile and /misc/src/version.c) all require it.

I've not been able to get any answers from the SRILM website and wondered if anybody here might know. I feel it must be something I'm doing, or not doing, because if it were truly a faulty build environment I would expect lots of people to have had the same problem.

Just a quick guess... but you have the base 'kernel-source, gcc, gcc++' installed?
