Repair operation aborted since NDS Server is down

I'm running OES 2 SP1 with all the current updates. Every so often, I start having problems with users not being able to login and other quirky issues. When I go to run ndsrepair -R it fails with the error "Repair operation aborted since NDS Server is down". If I issue a /etc/init.d/ndsd status it appears as though it is working fine. Restarting eDirectory with the /etc/init.d/ndsd restart command makes it work fine again. I have 18 OES linux servers and this has been happening about once or twice a week between all of my servers. Any ideas?
