New tree on one server, adding server hangs

Hi All

After battling with adding a server to my existing tree, I decided to create a new tree on my vmware esxi.
So I've installed a SLES 11 64 bit, and I've tried installing edir 8.8sp5 on it.
It's creating the tree nicely.
Then I try to add a r/w replica edir to the master, but that fails by hanging in the 'synchronizing schema'.
Now I'm just about at my whits end.
I've added the multicast route, I've added the snmp component, i've even created the hosts.nds despite that I should have a working slp setup.

What on earth is wrong???
