Installing new server into an existing tree

I'm trying to install a new server into an existing tree and I'm having problems. The install doesn't seem to be able to resolve my tree names. I was reading the edirectory install guide and it mentions open slp to resolve tree names. Do I have to have this configured?

The documentation is not very good about listing prereqs for installing into an existing tree.
