Good! If that's how you installed the tree, and it works, then that's

May LDAP systems use a DC object as a container at the top of the tree,
but it's not required. With eDirectory, you can, but you have to create
the tree that way.

With iManager, create dc=com, then create dc=domain,dc=com.

It's not Novell. It's LDAP. Other systems that assume you'll have a
DC=something are just as valid, but no more correct, than a system that
assumes that you installed it with O=DS, so that's obviously what you
wanted it to be.
