Free up space from deleted mailbox

Found the issue with our slow GW access for the past week. Two users had forwarders setup to an external account then had put an out of office on the external account so emails bouncing backwards and forwards.
Over 450000 emails ! Server ran out of space today.
We have deleted the email accounts via ConsoleOne but the space has not freed up yet. Is there anything we can do to force this through ?
