Abend every few minutes on bad message

I'm in a hurt bag. Friday at 10am my GWIA started abending every few
minutes on a bad message in the RECEIVE folder; I was running GW656. I
was able to identify the bad messages and remove them from the RECEIVE
folder and the GWIA would run fine for a while until the next bad
message. I also tried renaming all the GWIA folders, but the problem is
obviously isolated to the RECEIVE folder. A trend I'm seeing with EVERY
bad message is the RCPT header reads "RCPT TO:<>". Also, it appears all
the messages include one or more gif files. Does the the GWIA barf on an
empty RCPT header or am I running into some kind of a mime buffer
underrun?

My Symantec AV is current.

All the bad messages are obviously spam and the inbound quantity of mail
is normal so it's not a mailbomb.

I just upgraded GW to the lastest full 656 update (657) to address the
latest security issues discovered, but the 657 GWIA is vulnerable to the
same problem I had before the update.
