Blackberry and Groupwise

Hello

Currently I have my ipod connected to a google calendar, so when I am walking around I can use the internal wifi to receive appointments etc. My work environment is Groupwise therefore I am interested in extending this idea one step further and connecting my wireless device to my groupwise calendar. As part of this setup I am looking at a new phone with wifi. My question is in regards to the blackberries do I need a Blackberry enterprise server even if I am only interested in connecting up using wifi networks. I am aware of Groupwise Mobile Server and the many phones that are connectable to this service and this may be the way I have to go if the BES is a required part of connecting blackberries to Groupwise
