Agreed, Tom. My users have had a ton of problems moving to GW8 if they change the default dir. or do not uninstall GW7.
We've been using CleanIt to remove GW7 before installing GW8 and that works perfectly. One of the nice things that I like about CleanIt is that it removes your Windows Messaging profile which the default uninstall does not.
