Just wanted to reiterate what Danita said. I've done upgrades of GW since 4.1. The only one that has been a pain was 4.1 to 5.x. From 5.x forward, each has been progressively easier. The latest move from v7 to v8 was easy as pie.
The only snag is if your version does not properly report in C1 which is hardly a show stopper. It's often fixed by recopying the .DC files or (for POs) rebuilding the admin database from the console screen.
