I sent you email as we're getting it now too. In our case, we have GW Archive but we specifically exclude the WIP (we can delete items in our WIP without a problem in the 32-bit client).
I don't believe we have smart purge on, but rather message retention service, which I thought only prevented you from entirely deleting the message (ie, purge, or delete and empty).
