Found this in another forum thread and it fixed it.
Your proxy user (as defined in the MA's startup file) needs to be given
rights to the ChatContainer object below the MessengerService object.
Give the user Compare, Read, Write (inheritable) attribute rights and
Browse, Create, Rename, Delete (inheritable) entry Rights.
This is missing from the documentation. Sorry for the confusion.
