Default Any Success with Ubuntu? HELP!!

I seem to have tried everything. I am running Ubuntu. I have downloaded the Linux tarball for Groupwise Messenger 2.0. I have extracted to my desktop the tarball, creating the file nvlmsgr.bin. From here, I have tried the following, all as su (superuser):

Try 1: .sh nvlmsgr.bin

Try 2: sh ./nvlmsgr.bin

Try 3: chmod 755 nvlmsgr.bin
then sh ./nvlmsgr.bin

Try 4: sudo chmod a+x nvlmsgr.bin
then sudo ./nvlmsgr.bin

For the last two, the first command worked. Every time I try to run the nvlmsgr.bin file, I get the following:

"Extracting files, please wait ... tail: cannot open '+36' for reading: No such file or directory

gzip,: stdin; not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
Failed to extract the client files."

Every time, the same message. Has anyone else run into this and have a solution? Please help!
