iChain and gateway

I've a problem with the iChain configuration:

1-the gateway has not be set because the servers are on the same network, and because the gateway is not available at the moment.
2- the iChain can't connect to the LDAP

questions:

1- are the two problems related?
2- I MUST have a gateway?
