Incompatible versions Designer/Vault

We are using designer 3.0.1 (the one that comes with IDM 3.6.1a).
We installed IDM 3.6.1a on OES2SP1 32 bit.
When deploying a project, I get the error message "The Identity Manager version in Designer and the Identity Vault are not compatible". Designer is unable to deploy attributes to the driverset object. The drivers themself seem to be deployed.
When using a newer Designer version (stable release 3.5 M1, July 2, 2009), we got an additional error message, complaining that designer was configured to use 3.6.1 and that the actual value in the ID vault was 3.6. Changing the server properties in designer from 3.6.1 to 3.6 did remove the additional error message, but the first one is still reported.
We let designer (via the button next to the IDM version of the server) detect the version installed on the server by itself, and that was successful.
Any clue what the problem might be? Where does designer get the IDM version from?
I have to mention that the installation of IDM 3.6.1a was not flawless: the installer did hang numerous times (most offen when installing the Roles Services driver, but sometimes while it was still asking installation details). After about 6 tries (an changing the VM from dual CPU to single CPU), one installation completed to the end.
The installation log files never showed any error (except when querying the rpm packages installed of course).
