Ah, but with Designer, it's an option. They *ask* you if you want the
externals exported. What they don't do, but should, is:
a) limit the externals to those actually referenced by the driver being
exported
b) fix the import so that it warns before changing something that exists
in the target

I don't recall one way or the other. I'll see if I can test that, though.
The deploy *should* show what's being changed, and I'm normally very
picky about reading the pre-deploy summary to make sure that it's not
missing any changes that I'm expecting it to make, so I'm surprised that
I would have missed this.
