iManager 2.0.2 RHEL3 problems

We're still on iManager 2.0.2, and we use Novell Portal Services for the Identity Manager 2 Password Reset module. Novell Portal Services frequently stop responding and/or crash with a bus error in libzip.so. Has anyone found a way to make the novell-tomcat4 service recover reliably from these crashes? At least half the time when I restart the service I get 404 errors and then I have to restore /var/opt/novell/iManager/nps from a tarball in order to get it working again. Sometimes even that doesn't work. It feels like voodoo to me. Does anyone understand why Tomcat gets 404 errors after a crash and how to fix it reliably?
