I suspect file compression may at least be part of the problem here.
I agree that it would certainly be preferable to avoid turning file
compression on in the first place, and if the volumes are ever recreated,
the file compression should be disabled at that time.
In the meantime, however, try these commands, suggested by Geoff Strickler
and TID# 10067682:
SET Dirty Disk Cache Delay Time = 0.1
SET DAYS UNTOUCHED BEFORE COMPRESSION = 100000
SET Convert Compressed To Uncompressed Option = 2
SET Maximum Concurrent Compressions = 1
SET Enable File Compression = on
