Default File decompression after copy to USB drive

I have a new client that has been having intermittant problems with their tape backup drive, and will be replacing it shortly. In the meantime, I was going to set them up with an automated file copy to a USB drive attached to a Windows XP workstation. However, I am concerned that the file copy will trigger decompression of older files in excess of available space on the volumes.

I looked at FILER and CHKVOL statistics, but I am having difficulty determining which statistics to look at to determine whether the file copy will will cause a problem. Also, is there a way to copy the files uncompressed to the USB drive, but leave them compressed on the Netware server?

Thank you
