Default Hard Drive Addition

I'm pretty new to the Novell world but I've got a lot of computer and IT knowledge. The situation is this: I have a Dell PowerEdge 4400 that came with (2) 18GB SCSI HDs back in 2000. A friend loaded NW5.1 at that time. To my knowledge, there have been no updates applied and the system has run continuously w/o a hiccup. We started to run out of storage space so I bought (2) 146GB SCSI HDs to add to the Server. The 4400 has (6) hot swappable slots available in the front. After physically mounting the HDs in the carriers, I inserted them in the next two available slots and rebooted the server. NW powered them up and recognized them, assigning them SCSI IDs of 2 and 3. The two 18s are IDs 0 and 1 and are still installed. I have only three volumes set up in the server; SYS, DATA and BIN. No RAID is installed. I have several questions, but I'll do one at a time. First, if the new drives are powered up and recognized, do I have to load drivers or initialize/format the drives before they can be used for storage. All I need is to have the additional capacity available for use as storage on the DATA volume.
