SATA-RAID and NetWare 5.1 ??
Hi folks,
currently I'm running an old Compaq ML370 G1 server with NW 5.1 SP8. This is my home server, so a 1 Ghz PIII and 3 GB of memory are more than enough.
The server has 6 72 GB SCSI disks in RAID 5 configuration. This RAID contains the really important data.
Additionally, I have two Compaq 4314R RAID enclosures attached with 14 72 GB SCSI disks each, also running as a RAID 5. This RAID contains the fun data (music, films, books) which is not really important.
Everything is backed up regularly to a MSL5026.
Problem is, the power cost for the big RAID is eating me alive. And it produces way too much heat.
So I thought about changing the big array to a 4x 750 GB SATA RAID 5 array (No, stop screaming, I know you shouldn't use SATA for important data!).
BUT: Which controller to use? It must be a hardware RAID 5 controller AND have NetWare 5.1 drivers. It should preferably be PCI 64 / 66 MHz to fit into he server. It could also be PCI-X or PCIe if I'll upgrade the server to a ML370 G4 which is growing dust in the cellar.
I recently bought a 3ware 9650SE only to discover that it doesn't support NetWare.
All other controllers that I know about (adaptec 2420SA, HP 6-port (which is in reality an adaptec 2610SA), HP P600, HP P400, all the 3ware) either have no NetWare drivers or only drivers for NetWare 6.5. There's ICP-vortex but they are virtually unknown in Germany and therefor difficult to find used (and prohibitively expensive when new).
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Fussel
