Default Novell Client Workstation only

We have xp pcs with novell client 4.91 sp 2 and sp4 on them. They also have zenworks for desktops installed. If the connection is lost to the server such as the switch is down or powered off or the network cable is disconnected from the back of the pc you can login with the workstation only checked. The problem is that you can only do this once. If you reboot the pc it comes back up to the client and no matter if the network is there or not or if the pc is logged in via workstation only or not it will hang right after you type in the username/password. The pc will go to the next screen and stop. The only way to fix this is to remove the client/zenworks in safemode and then the pc will boot up without the client. Then you can reinstall the client and zenworks. Why does the client hang this way?
