Unable to install Joomla on AMP NW65SP6

Hi

I have set up a new test server using the AMP option on NW65SP6. MySQL
is running i unsecured way, no password for root (Test server in a
protected environment). Anyway when I attempt to install Joomla I
cannot make the install work. Going to the http://servername/joomla
finds the index.php OK, but only displays a blank page. If try to go to
http://servername/joomla/installation/install.php I get a blank page.
If I go to http://servername/joomla/installation/install1.php I get what
you would expect, but when I fill the fields and hit next I get a blank
page again. Any pointers as where to look would be greatly appreciated.
