Apache URL translation

We redesigned our website and cleaned up the URLs. One item I haven't
been able to figure out yet. We have lots of pages dedicated to
individual projects. They are all served up from the same PHP script.
Right now the url is domain/projects.php?project=type/name. What I
would like to do is have the url be either domain/projects/type/name
or domain/type/name. This would be used to access the page and would
also be displayed in the browser, but Apache would handle the
translation. I am fairly certain this is possible. Any help? Thanks!
