I have seem this happen. Basicly the eDir services have not started.
Login as root, and check /var/log/messages. It will give you a run down of
the errors. I usually just reboot again and it fixes it. Usually when it
happens to me, I was the one that messed with something on it (newbie alert).
If reboot doesn't help, then it will be time to get down and dirty, start
the services manually. I can't help you at that point, since I am not that
good at it - yet.
Try to check out eDir services on linux, and see if you can find the
services that eDirectory requires. Start them manually, and see if you get
errors.
