Default Reset "root" user

I need some help resetting the root user account. I am able to log into the
server (OES 2 sp1) with my user account and a generic "itstaff account" but
not root. When I try and "super user" in, I get "incorrect password" even
though no password was requested (in other words, from a terminal I type
"su" then instead of receiving a prompt for the password, I get "incorrect
password".)

I've seen possible avenues for resetting the root account, is that what I
should try, or am I stuck and need to rebuild from bare metal?
