Default Kernel upgrades?

I seem to have inherited two Novell OES servers. Please please please excuse my ignorance, as this is the first time I've used any of the OES Linux systems, so I am really a noob. I have, however, other experience with many other distros, so I should be able to figure it out rather quickly.

First, how the heck do I tell what version of OES Linux I have? cat /proc/version just gives the kernel version, which doesn't seem to help much.

Second, I have upgraded just about everything with rug, but any time I touch any of the kernel patches, I can no longer boot the system. Thank god for VM snapshots.

Is there a quick and dirty how-to on how to actually upgrade the kernel?
