failed to get speed/duplex

I have a couple of servers displaying the following error message and this appears to possilby be source of servers losing connectivity.:

Sep 28 13:29:08 SERVER kernel: bonding: Warning: failed to get speed/duplex from eth0, speed forced to 100Mbps, duplex forced to Full.

eth1 repeats with same error message.

What causes this error and how can this be corrected?
