Michael,
take a look at the kernel ring messages using "dmesg".
Scroll back from the last lines and see if there are any error in.
I had a similar problem a few days ago with fiber channel connected lun's and got a lot of I/O errors, whereas I found that whatever made them read/only for me. And read only does not allow to activate the pool and such things.
