FWIW: there was an (6 year) old config.txt file in the SYSTEM folder on the source. Migration Tools picked this up and dropped a copy into the /var/opt/novell/migration/NewProj0/fs/mnt/source folder. Renaming the file on the source to config.old and then clicking on [Configure] on the target now works without the error. The .../fs/mnt/source folder now has the volumes from the source server.
