Default Mac users losing their home directories

Hi! We're running 10.5 with the latest updates. We authenticate through eDir and serve homes using NFA. For the most part it works very well.

Today two users, at different times, reported that they were no longer able to make modifications to their home directories. This happens in the middle of the session and is solved by logging out and logging back in.

Alternately, if you point the client at /Volumes/share/user's home it seems to work properly. You can create folders and save to it, etc.

However if you click on the Home directory under Places or the Go menu, you see the same directory but can't make any changes to it. Also, importantly, any changes you made to the directory using the method described in the above paragraph are NOT reflected until you log out and back in.

Has anyone seen this before?

thanks,
