Can I join a NW65 to the tree on a NW42SB ?

Not sure -- but if you use the Migration tools, you would retain the
existing tree. As to GroupWise, if you migrate, then you could simply
copy your existing GroupWise over to the new server (which would take
over the identity of the existing server), and then do an in place
upgrade of GroupWise.

Take a look at the documentation for the Server Migration and
Consolidation Tool regarding an over the wire migration...
