Default ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY

I've got a Compaq Evo N600c notebook with an ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY card
that I'm trying to get to work correctly in SLED (released version). I've
configured the Customer Center with an eval activation code, and I've
installed the ATI drivers. These two packages were installed:

x11-video-fglrx-8.26.18-2
ati-fglrx-kmp-default-8.26.18_2.6.16.21_0.8-2

When I go into the "Desktop Effects" applet it keeps telling me my card
isn't in the database and that 3D acceleration isn't enabled. However from
some googling that I've done it looks like I should be able to get this
card to work correctly with XGL. After installing the drivers, just what
do I need to do? The few things I've seen suggested have either resulted
in no change or in the worst case breaking X altogether. Any suggestions?

Joe
