After instlaling the RPM make sure you configure X windows using this command... it tells sax to use to use the 'fglrx' driver (the official ATI driver)
sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx

I have stopped trying the official drivers from ATI. I had to find first a distribution with a graphics driver that works with native resolution of my monitor. Only the latest distribution from Red Hat and Suse worked out of the box (mind I had to disable ACPI).
I did the sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx after installing the rpm. You find many peoples have big problems with ati and linux. It's not clear who to blame.
How much RAM does your machine have, and what version do you use (64Bit / 32Bit)?
Besides other problems, this is really frustrating and time consuming. HP even boast about how their notebooks are certified for Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. No sound, no graphic support... odd certification.
