Default ATI Radeon 1600 Driver - SLED 11 - xinerama failure

Hi All

I have been trying to improve the performance and features of the ATI
drivers for the Radeon 1600 card. Its a notebook or I would change it to
anything else!

System is a fully patched SLED 11 system

I setup the ATI repository and installed the relevant drivers

glxgears gave a performance of 50 fps - The quality was appalling

I downloaded the latest driver directly from the website (ati-driver-
installer-9-3-x86.x86_64)

Enabled dual head

glxgears runs at 1100 fps

fglrxinfo shows
display: :0.1 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8543 Release

display: :0.1 screen: 1
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8543 Release

But as soon as I enable xinerama and restart X the whole system hangs

Procedure
init 3
aticonfig --xinerama=on
init 5

If I reboot same thing, cant toggle to terminal sessions or anything

if I boot to run 3 and disable xinerama then do an init 5 - all ok, but
no wide screen

Has anyone got any ideas how to fix this, apart from buying a new laptop
without an ATI video card?
