I just found something useful. In my File Browser window there is an icon at the top right named "Novell Services." When I clicked on the icon it opened up two more browser windows - one called "NVFS Top Directory" which shows the tree and the other called "NVFS" which has two links - "All Connections" and "Available Connections." I am able to browse the file systems on the servers I'm authenticated to without mapping a drive. There's no way that I have found (yet) to type in a UNC path to get to a server I'm not authenticated to but it does let me access files without a drive map.
I'm using Gnome in SLED 11 with the Novell Client 2.0 SP2 for Linux. I don't know if the same is true in SLED 10.
