Default Networking Disabled by Default?

I have both SLES 11 and SLED 11 running at a client site. Local networking appears to be disabled, WAN access works fine. I have been sitting here among dozens of Windows users (which all 'just work'), playing with dozens of files and settings after reading hundreds of forum threads and articles. The Windows machines all see the the SLE machines, but Suse sees nothing - not even each other! There is no broadcast, as this is blocked as well.

Apparently, this is not an isolated problem - there are literally thousands of LAN complaints from SLE users and administrators all over the Internet. I have spent more time playing with this than I did in OpenSUSE 10! NO SMB/CIFS and NO NFS!! All I can seem to find are complaints, but no solutions. What a joke - Enterprise. Open SUSE 11 works out of the box!

CIFS mounts constantly return "Error 111", while NFS mounts sit for the 2 minute timeout and return a "mount.nfs4: mount system call failed" error. Special settings here to inhibit networking - NO! Using Konqueror 4 'smb://windowsservername' the thing reads the disk fine in one second; I can't transfer files or backup the disk with that. I have disabled firewalls (ridiculous) and played with sysconfig and /etc settings until I am ready to trash this.

All mount calls are standard and nothing special or weird is used here. Is there anyone that is aware of what is necessary to network an SLE system with another computer (Linux or Windows)? Any real help would be very much appreciated.
