Default can't ping outside anything outside local network

Hi all,
I am not sure where to ask this question. I am currently going through the Self-Study course SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10.
For the self-study exercise, you use Virtual Machines. I have the SUSE linux desktop and server running using VM Player. This is all running on a Windows XP Pro computer as the Host.
I can access the Internet from BOTH virtual machines, the desktop and server.
What I cannot do is PING anything OUTSIDE of my local network. Part of the excersise is to ping NOVELL: Worldwide and then do a traceroute to NOVELL: Worldwide.
When I attempt to do the ping, I get 'unknown host' and the traceroute gives me 'temporary failure in name resolution'.
I know it is probably a DNS problem but I don't know how to fix it.
My Internet connection is the Cricket modem.
On the Host (XP) computer I went to a DOS prompt and typed ipconfig /all.

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix.......:
Description.................................:VIA Compatable Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address..........................:00-1E-8C-64-B8-FA
Dhcp Enabled..............................:No
IP Address..................................:10.0.0.7 7
Subnet Mask...............................:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway..........................:
DNS Servers................................:172.28.221 .53

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:
Media State.................................:Media disconnected
Description...................................:Cri cket EVDO Network adapter
Physical Address............................:00-A0-C6-00-00-00

PPP adapter Cricket Broadband:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix........:
Description..................................:WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
Physical Address...........................:00-53-45-00-00-00
Dhcp Enabled...............................:No
IP Address...................................:10.102. 173.188
Subnet Mask................................:255.255.255.2 55
Default Gateway...........................:10.102.173.188
DNS Servers.................................:172.28.22 1.53
172.28.221.54
NetBIOS over Tcpip.......................:Disabled

At the bottom of the screen, for the PPP adapter Cricket Broadband, it shows the DNS Servers. I put that information in the resolv.conf as nameserver2 and nameserver3. nameserver1 is an address provided by the class, 10.0.0.254. The address of the SUSE Linux Server. This was done on the SUSE Linux Desktop virtual machine.
The resolv.conf on the SUSE Linux virtual server contains 127.0.0.1 as nameserver1, 10.0.0.254 as nameserver2. The Domain Search is digitalairlines.com.
I added mycricket.com because of the Cricket broadband connection.

I am still getting the same messages.
Using Cricket Broadband as my Internet connection, I couldn't access the Internet from either of my Virtual machines without using a proxy.
It is the proxy by Analogx. I have been using is for years and works great because I was on dial-up before getting Cricket Broadband.

I would appreciate any ideas because I would like to continue with the self-study and I am kind of at a standstill and I feel it is just a configuration problem.
Thanks for any assistance and hopefully I can provide you with additional information as you need it.
Judy
