Default Firefox 3.0.13 fails with a segmentation fault

Hello

I am new to Linux and have been using SLED10 SP2 for four months and have installed the necessary patches etc. as and when required without problem.

The last set of patches which I installed on Sunday August 23 consisted of the following:

Security updates

sledp2 - bind
sledp2 - compact-curl2
sledp2 - curl
sledp2 - flash-player
sledp2 - gaim
sledp2 - icu
sledp2 - kernel
sledp2 - libtiff
sledp2 - libtiff
sledp2 - libxml2
sledp2 - Mozilla Firefox
sledp2 - wget
sledp2 - xpdf

Other patches/updates

sledp2 - file
sledp2 - Mozilla Firefox
sledp2 - util-linux
sledp2 - yast2-registration

The software update then required to install the following additional software:

bind-libs - 9.3.4-1.29
bind-utils - 9.3.4-1.29
compact-curl2 - 7.11.0-20.6
curl - 7.15.1-19.14.2
file - 4.21-47.4.2

firefox3-atk - 1.12.3-0.4.3
firefox3-cairo - 1.2.4-0.4.3
firefox3-glib2 - 2.12.4-0.4.3
firefox3-gtk2 - 2.10.6-0.4.3
firefox3-pango - 1.14.5-0.4.3

flash-player - 9.0.246.0-0.3
gaim - 1.5.0-50.34

libicu - 3.4-16.10
libtiff - 3.8.2-5.16
libxml2 - 2.6.23-15.20
mozilla-xulrunner190 - 1.9.0.13-1.4
mozilla-xulrunner190-gnomevfs - 1.9.0.13-1.4
mozilla-xulrunner190-translations - 1.9.0.13-1.4

Mozilla Firefox - 3.0.13-0.4
Mozilla Firefox-branding-upstream - 3.0.13-0.4
Mozilla Firefox-translations - 3.0.13-0.4

util-linux - 2.12r-35.35.2
wget - 1.10.2-15.11
xpdf-tools - 3.01-21.19
yast2-registration - 2.13.24-0.4.2

I left the netbook to install the various patches etc. and when I returned to the machine seven hours later, it prompted me to reboot. This worked OK. I launched Firefox via the 'Computer' menu - bottom left corner on the Gnome desktop. Firefox reported checking translations and add-ons then nothing. I left it for half an hour - Firefox window still not loaded. I re-booted the netbook and tried again.
It did not report checking translations and add-ons (I presume this is only done on the initial launch), left it again for a while - still no luck. Then I tried running Firefox from the terminal (Gnome Terminal) as follows:

mf_hunter1@linux-b7cl:~> firefox
/usr/bin/firefox: line 134: 4011 Segmentation fault $MOZ_PROGRAM "$@"
mf_hunter1@linux-b7cl:~>

I am running SLED10 SP2 with Gnome Desktop on a Lenovo S10e netbook.

Thanks
Michael
