SLES 11 VNC Issue - no desktop just gray
I have read posts about this but none of the replies have solved the issue for me. I *think* I have a graphics configuration issue but I am not sure.
This is a new install of SLES 11 on an IBM JS12 Power 6 blade (PPC64). I cannot access the VNC console. All I get is a gray screen. I have read posts here, a couple of technical bulletins and I still haven't been successful in solving the issue.
SLES was installed in text mode, using the equivalent of SSH (I guess). When I run the gdm command I see this:
gdm[3206]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.189733 seconds
gdm[3206]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.180011 seconds
gdm[3206]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.189889 seconds
gdm[3206]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.189652 seconds
gdm[3206]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.180677 seconds
gdm[3206]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.179531 seconds
gdm[3206]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors
When I access the Graphics Card and Monitor settings in yast, I get a brief flash and nothing displays, it just returns to the HW menu.
You can probably tell I am a Linux rookie here. I know enough to be dangerous and without a desktop I am pretty lost.
Any suggestions? I have followed the instructions in document 7002955 and 7003097 with no positive results.
Thanks
