Default Prob. making .iso in SLES 9

I am teaching SLES 9. (The Cengage textbook for SLES 10 is not ready yet.)
We run SLES 9 inside VMWare Player from an external USB 2.0 hard drive with Windows XP as the host OS. It works pretty well.

I want to have my students create an .iso file from any music CD. I see that SLES 9 mounts my /dev/dvd to /media/dvd. If I ls /media/dvd, I cannot see the music CD tracks. If I use dd to create an .iso, it creates a zero byte .iso file. Does anybody have any ideas? I thought this would be easier.
