Default SLES 10 SP1 and SCSI Ultra 320

Hello,

I have a new server were the disk sub-system is very unstable. The install of SLES10 SP1 will quite often fail. If I am lucky enough for the install to complete then any type of disk IO intensive task will cause the disk sub-system to fail.

In looking at the logs during install and at run time I noticed that the SCSI devices were failing and disconnecting. Further troubleshooting revealed that the problem is caused by the BIOS in my Adaptec AIC-7092W SCSI controller being set to 320 Mbs. If I changed the Adaptec controller to 160 Mbs then everything works wonderfully.

Does SLES10 SP1 support SCSI disk IO at 320 Mbs? If not, does anyone know when it will support the 320 Mbs speed? Is there some setting in my Adaptec controller that I am missing?

The following is the info on my hardware:

- Server: Supermicro server with X6DH8-XG2 motherboard. The motherboard has an integrated Adaptec AIC-7092W controller on it. The specs for this motherboard can be found at Supermicro, Inc. - Products | Motherboards | Xeon Boards | X6DH8-XG2
- OS: SLES10 SP1 32 bit (yes, I know the server is a 64 bit machine).

As a side note, I found OpenSuSE defect 195870 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=195870) which seems somewhat related to my problem. Granted the defect is for a different issue but the comments in this defect lead me to believe that OpenSuSE (and therefore SLES) have issues negotiating the SCSI bus speed (see comment 18 and beyond).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brad
