Where's the config?

A perfectly running server with OES2 installed and configured (for 6 months)

I changed a dead monitor, had beaucoup video problems and ran repair and several other utilities off the installation CD. I got those solved.

But now, the boot goes textual on me, as does the login, I have no grahphical interface nor any network configuration. It's as through the execution script and all of its settings is gone. he boot root volume is mounted, the folders and files all there, but this thing is just coming up dumb now. Oh, by the way, typing 'STARTX' gets me nowehere, generates a few errors and then back to the # prompt.

Any ideas for this Linidiot will be gratefully accepted. I really would rather not wipe it clean and re-install / reconfigure it all again in I don't hafta.
