Default change/disable initial boot menu backround

Can I change or disable the graphic background image in the grub menu? I thought I had it figured out with "bootsplash", but that had no effect whatsoever, I still get the blue SuSE background, no matter what I do. I was able to get rid of the graphic after you make the OS choice with the splash=verbose boot option in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. I know this is kind of silly but the reason behind it is that we don't normally run with physical consoles, they are all remote, and the pretty graphics look horrible. We have our runlevel set at 3 so why should we have a graphic boot screen for a completely text based interface? I've been working on this for days and haven't made any progress.

Thanks!
-Toney.
