Short host name resolution

I have a quick DNS related question. BIND running on SLES10, configured exclusively through Yast. We need to be able to resolve a host through it's short hostname. Example: ping host1.domain.com returns results, we also would like ping host1 to return results as well. Sure, we can enter it into host files and such but would like to do it centrally keeping with the idea of the central DNS server. How would one configure this in the Yast DNS config?
