Okay figured out the problem.
When I first went to the Novell Customer Center and selected "My Products | Mirror Credentials" the Username and Password fields were blank. However when I first registered the machine using "yast2 inst_suse_register" it setup two repositories with a username and password so I used them. Example below:

So I used f55ec8dd1facedb6e73f54faced9b011 and 3f771e48d9234faced6b5faced0292d906 as the username/password in "yast2 smt" and the test worked so I assumed that these must be correct.
It was only later that I returned to the "My Products | Mirror Credentials" section and say that the username/password field were populated with different credentials: i.e.
Username : 143159
Password : 23d61faced
Once I used these credentials everything worked perfectly.
