install sles10sp2 fails:Error unable to copy media directory

I get the following error every time I try to install sles 10 sp2 onto either xen or vmware on different machines:
Error: unable to copy media directory to /vat/tmp/TmpDirxxxxx

I have tried both 32 and 64 bit versions

I have tried using an iso image as the CD as well as an actual CD - same error

On the same machines sles 10 sp1 has been working fine for a long time
